Greetings to everyone. We are nicely into the new year, and I am very happy with the progress we are making on our Journal schedule: Volume 59-1 is hitting mailboxes right now, and we have five other issues in very mature stages of graphics production. Our 2026 convention/conference in Kelowna is shaping up to be an exciting event; the organizing team is working on setting the program of speakers now. I am thrilled that Aviation Cultures is partnering with us to bring a new and dynamic perspective. Since all our national members are already in receipt of their Volume 58-4 Journal, either in hard copy by Canada Post, or electronically, we wish to remind you to take the time to fill out the Journal Awards ballot after reading and consider your choices for the two awards. You can return the ballot to me by email or to the postal address on the ballot, whatever delivery you find works easiest for you. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, please check the letter that came with your Journal to see when the expiry of your membership is. While membership is holding steady, this is because of your faithfulness in renewing, as well as bringing in new members. If you haven’t done so already, please remember to send in your membership renewal for 2026. Donations are always appreciated, and your support is critical to our success. There are still many books for sale on our website, so please check it out as they make for great reading as well as fine gifts. I believe that 2026 will be a defining and positive year for our society, and I hope all of you will be a part of it. I want to thank our interim Newsletter editor, Andrea Wiseman for her commitment to take on these additional responsibilities as we look for a new e-Newsletter editor. If you, or anyone you know is interested in finding out more about this position, please contact me, and we can discuss the details of this important role with the CAHS. Blue skies, |

Progress is being made every week organizing the joint CAHS-Aviation Cultures convention. Thanks to everyone who took the time to send in a speaker submission for consideration. The convention planners are currently going through the large quantity of presentation submissions and are working on the difficult job of deciding which ones to select, as well as firming up the schedule. The final list should be completed and announced shortly. Based on the incredible list of speakers, this will be a fantastic convention. Stay tune for more information to follow in the coming weeks. Convention registration will open soon, but you can reserve your hotel room now. |

On behalf of the CAHS, I would like to thank everyone who has donated to the CAHS (National and Chapters). I have completed creating the 2025 donation tax receipts, and these have been sent out by email (or mailed through Canada Post to anyone who has not provided an email address). If you were expecting a tax receipt and did not receive it by email on 20 February, please contact me. Furthermore, if you find there is an error on the receipt you received, also contact me with the correct information, and I can get you a replacement receipt. The receipts recently sent out cover donations made between March and December 2025. In case you forgot, receipts for January-February 2025 donations were eligible for inclusion on 2024 income taxes (as a way of helping charities catch up after a postal strike slowed down getting donations and the end of 2024), so I sent donors receipts for January-February 2025 donations in March 2025. If you did not include those donations/receipts on your income taxes last year, and if you have misplaced those receipts, please contact me, and I can send you a copy of that receipt again. Your donations mean the world to the CAHS. It helps us keep operating at the National level without having to increase annual membership rates, and your donations also help your local Chapters run meetings and carry out historical commemorations locally. Thank you for your generosity, and we hope you continue to donate to the CAHS and our Chapters in the coming year. |

ANSWER 1: “At the end of the Arrow programme, 19 J-75 engines had been bought from Pratt & Whitney US via the USAF to be used in the MK1 Arrows. There were four P-3 prototypes and 15 P-5 production models. After protracted negotiations lasting nearly 2 years, a deal was struck. With less than 70 hours of flight operations on all these engines they were sold back to the USAF for about $2 million dollars, about 25% of the original price. The money did not go back to the Department of Defence production but rather directly to the RCAF, to be used at their discretion in a year that saw a number of cutbacks.” Source: Arrow Countdown, pg. 90 (Zuuring) |

ANSWER 2: “At some RAF schools, the wings parades were considerably more matter of fact. Although a member of the RCAF, Bert Houle at Massey, Ontario, went to No.32 SFTS, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, an RAF school, which had a few vacancies at the time. When the time came for graduation, Houle says, an instructor awarded the pilots’ wings by standing on a chair and tossing them to the individuals as their names were called.” Source: Wings For Victory, pg. 162 (Dunmore) |

ANSWER 3: “However, a magnificent Canadian tribute to the Halifax is presently under restoration at the RCAF Museum in Trenton, Ontario. On the night of 23/24 April 1945, Halifax Mark VIIa, Serial No.NA 337 of 644 Squadron, was shot down by ground fire while on a Special Duties operation dropping supplies to the Norwegian Resistance. The aircraft then ditched in Lake Mjosa near the town of Hamar at about two o’clock in the morning. Unfortunately, all the crew except for the rear gunner, Flight Sergeant Weightman, perished from exposure in the lake’s frigid waters before local Norwegians could rescue them later that morning. This Halifax lay undisturbed in its watery grave at a depth of some 750 feet for the next fifty years. Then, in the summer of 1995, a tenacious group of Canadians known as the Halifax Aircraft Association recovered the bomber for restoration and future display at the RCAF Memorial Museum. This determined and resourceful all-volunteer restoration team has already worked wonders. Once it is completed, estimated for 2006, and it is proudly displayed in its own-purpose-built hangar, this pristine Mark VII will be the most authentic example of the type in existence. It is highly appropriate that the RCAF Museum display this particular variant, since 408, 415, 426, and 432 Squadrons all flew the Mark VII operationally for at least a limited period of time during the latter days of the European war.” Source: No Prouder Place, pg. 448-449 (Bashow) |
